Lip augmentation

Lip enhancement or augmentation is a procedure considered by some people wanting larger or fuller lips.

These procedures may also be suggested by a cosmetic surgeon for certain abnormalities of the lips.

Lip enhancement may be temporary or more permanent. Some people prefer a temporary approach in case they change their minds about the new look later.

No cosmetic surgery procedure is without risks, and these should be discussed with the surgeon beforehand.

Types of lip enhancement injection

Temporary lip enhancement can be achieved by injecting substances into the lip.

Many substances have been used to temporarily enlarge the lips. These most common filler used is collagen. Hyaluronic acid gel or Hylaform, Restylane is another option.

These substances dissolve eventually and need to be topped up every 3 to 6 months to maintain the enhanced appearance.

An allergy test is needed before a collagen injection.

Fat injection is another approach, using the person's own fat, usually from the abdomen or buttocks. Fat may also be stored for later use, as this approach is also temporary.

Permanent lip enlargement

Tissue taken from deeper layers of skin from another part of the body may be used as a graft in lip enhancement. The dermis tissue is threaded into the lips to add bulk.

This is a bigger procedure than the injection methods and can lead to more complications and swelling for up to three weeks after the operation.

Lip implants made from synthetic material are another option. Other techniques involve using donated human skin .

Lip surgery

A procedure called surgical advancement of the vermilion may be considered to make the lips look fuller. This is done by adjusting the mucosa of the inner side of the lip.

What are the alternatives to lip enhancement?

Lipstick and other cosmetics are everyday alternatives to lip enhancement procedures.

Who are the best candidates for lip augmentation?

A person considering lip enhancement should be in good general health. You are not a good candidate for lip augmentation if you have:

Current cold sores

Certain diseases such as diabetes or lupus

Any scarring of the lips

Blood clotting problems

Lip augmentation is cosmetic surgery and so is not usually available on the NHS. It is therefore likely you will need to have this surgery done privately.

Once you have found a suitably qualified doctor to carry out the procedure for you, you will need to discuss with them the various options open to you and decide together which best suits your needs.

As with any medical procedure, you should tell your doctor about any allergies you have and any medicines you are taking. You should also discuss your medical history. Certain diseases such as diabetes can increase your chances of complications. If you are a smoker, this may also be a complicating factor.
